The Problem
According to a World Bank report, malnutrition leads to the deaths of 16,000 children worldwide everyday. The failure to tackle this problem places it as a common underlying factor that continues to derail the achievement of all the 8 MDGs. Sub-Sahara Africa is the worst hit with over 500 million affected. By not providing the poorest with the building block of basic nutrition, they are unable to even attempt to pull themselves out of poverty.
The Approach
Edom Nutritional Solutions fortifies staple flour with Iron, Vitamin A, and Zinc to address malnutrition. Micro-nutrient rich porridge flour, maize meal flour & a health seasoning premix is distributed through affordable retail centers in rural areas, low market urban areas and outlets in packs as small as 250 grams. In 2008, the Copenhagen consensus endorsed this as the least expensive, most reliable approach to curb micro-nutrient malnutrition.
The Progress + Traction
Edom has contracted 3,855 farmers through their cooperatives to produce grain amaranth, moringa oleifera & mushroom, and produces 27,000 tons of the fortification premix to reach 22.2 million consumers each year. Revenue for 2013 was $2M.
